Condition

Heart palpitations

What is it?

The heart contains a specialized electrical system that enables impulses to travel along the heart muscle very quickly. There are electrical centers along this system, called nodes, that generate and project those same impulses.

When these nodes are not working properly, or not firing in sync, then the heart can develop an abnormal rhythm, termed an arrhythmia. There are many types of arrhythmias, which vary in severity from benign to life-threatening.

Key Points

  • An abnormal heart rhythm
  • Ranges from benign to life-threatening
  • May present as palpitations or fluttering feeling in the chest
  • May cause dizziness or fainting
  • Affect 53 people per 1000 in US
  • Atrial fibrillation is the most common type, but rarely fatal
  • Diagnosis requires thorough history and electrocardiogram

How do we treat it?

Rhythm is central to all of life, and perhaps the most important rhythm in the human body is that of the heart. An arrhythmia can indicate a basic problem in the nervous system as the nodes responsible for the electrical impulses are bundles of nervous tissue.

Or, this condition may indicate a more pervasive rhythmic disturbance. Does your life seem to lack structure and a calm sense of routine? Are you constantly distracted by unexpected demands? Your heart condition may be related to a disharmony between your healthy physiological rhythm and the one imposed on you by your life.

Once we figure out the underlying reason for your arrhythmia, we will recommend appropriate remedies and lifestyle suggestions.
