Constipation is one of the most common gastrointestinal complaints and affects about 20% of the American population.
Symptoms include dry stools that are infrequent or hard to pass as well as bloating, abdominal pain and a feeling that bowel movements are incomplete.
Common causes of constipation include diet, lifestyle factors, improper motility through the intestines, medications and food sensitivities. Underlying conditions include hypothyroid, irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, pregnancy, diabetes, stress etc. Of opioid users, up to 90% experience constipation as a side effect.
Healthy bowel function can include movements anywhere from 3-21 times per week and occasional constipation can be normal. But if this symptom lasts more than 2-3 weeks, you may be experiencing chronic constipation which should be evaluated by a physician.
Constipation that persists can lead to hemorrhoids, anal fissures, rectal prolapse and fecal impaction.
